The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced June 10 that President Donald Trump has appointed John Rich as special envoy for American landowners, a new role focused on advocating for farmers, ranchers and private landowners.

According to USDA, Rich will work directly with landowners across the country to help ensure their concerns are represented and their property rights are protected. The role includes addressing challenges related to government regulations, outside interests and advocacy campaigns that USDA said may affect rural communities and private land ownership.

A major focus of the position will involve issues tied to large-scale solar and wind energy development and how those projects may affect productive farmland, ranchland and rural livelihoods.

According to USDA, Rich’s responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging directly with farmers, ranchers and private landowners on property-rights concerns.
  • Working with USDA leadership and stakeholders on issues affecting rural communities.
  • Advocating for landowners facing pressure related to renewable energy development projects.
  • Helping ensure landowners have a voice in decisions that impact their land and operations.

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins said the appointment is intended to support rural landowners and private property rights.

“America’s farmers, ranchers, and landowners are among the greatest stewards of our nation’s resources and the backbone of our rural communities,” said Secretary Rollins. “President Trump understands that private property rights are fundamental to the American way of life. John Rich has long been a champion for rural America, and I look forward to working alongside him as we continue fighting for the people who feed, fuel, and clothe our nation.”

Rich said his work will focus on protecting landowners and rural communities.

“President Trump has afforded me the great honor of serving as Special Envoy for American Landowners,” said Special Envoy Rich. “I look forward to representing and advocating for landowners’ rights and standing up for the farmers, ranchers, and rural families who work every day to provide for our country. Protecting private property rights and ensuring that landowners are not harassed, intimidated, or pressured by outside interests will be at the heart of this mission.”

USDA said the appointment reflects the administration’s broader effort to ensure farmers, ranchers, foresters and landowners maintain a strong voice in federal decision-making.
