Certainly the buzz word today in farming is “Soil Health”. Most of the time how to obtain it is confined to no-till covercropping practices. I want to introduce you to a farm that has built more soil health metrics than any farm I have been on in over 50 years that has not grown a covercrop in three generations and never returns crop residues to the soil except in the dairy manure they generate, and does a lot of tillage.

These farmers have been performing strictly true vertical tillage since 1984 with a corn for silage and alfalfa/grass rotation. They do almost everything wrong to build soil health according to government agents and their accomplices.

Getting to the core issues...Soil Health starts with managing water and air resources. Soil is a living “breathing” organism. Poor water infiltration AND percolation are essential if breathing is to happen properly, which means on a regular basis. Water resources aren’t just limited to downward storage either. Water needs to be able to return to the surface of the field to keep microbes and plants supplied with carbon dioxide. Yes, supplied by microbes who generate it so the plant can make sugars and other things to feed the microbial populations.

The next factor in creating healthy soil is creating and maintaining uniform soil density. This is critical because normal root system development requires it. “Normal” means the shape or architecture should be text book. When did you last see that on anything you grow!

The architecture is critical because the soil microbial world lives in community with the root system. The soil microbes increasing in density and diversity are the source of advances in every metric of soil heath.

The root system development of all plants is regulated by several different factors such as soil density (compaction issues), bio-chemical products impacting plant hormones (products of anaerobic or waterlogged soils) and the aerobic decomposition of root systems leading to the production of growth stimulating phyto-chemicals.

CurseBuster tillage achieves these essentials and more.  For example, the eco-system of soil needs to encourage the re-habitation of beneficial foraging insects and pollinators. Many of these are natural predators of insect pests. These friends will not move into the field that has buried the crop residue (no food or shelter present) or has a flooding problem that drowns the youngsters.

You can create this soil eco-system without compromise using the CurseBuster. It will leave root systems intact to be decomposed where they grew because the roots were inhabited by the microbes and fungi that will do the job very well. The physical impact of the tillage operation will not rearrange the locations of the soil bacterial and fungal populations. No relocation orders for them to die by. You want to see fungi increase in your soil, don’t make them move. If you want good fungi then make sure they can breathe. The pathogens prefer waterlogged soils.

CursesBuster is easily adjustable to help control winter annuals, weed, relieve compaction and level fields that are already planted, thereby eliminating burn-down chemicals and the issues they can create for the young crop. The technology is at home in row crop farming and pasture and forage production. Equipped with a seeder it can apply and effectively germinate seeds of about any type. The machine is optionally equipped with a rear hitch for pulling other implements.
